Introduction to Sustainable Living 10 & 11th of July 2010


This course will be of interest to anyone who has – or intends to have – land, upon which they want to live a more sustainable, low-impact, organic life style. It has evolved from the comments and experiences of many of our visitors – as well as ourselves – who would liked to have had access to a course of this nature when first moving onto their land, offering them inspiration and practical advice, therefore avoiding costly mistakes. Students of architecture, agriculture or landscape design could also be interested in attending, to view their subject from a different perspective. Anybody considering a longer, or more intensive course, could benefit from experiencing this weekend of exciting, varied workshops, before making a decision. These weekends are also well-suited for people with limited time available – maybe you are here on a property viewing visit, having to work weekdays, or just want to make more of your holiday. Should you wish to stay in this area a while longer, we can assist with accommodation arrangements. Contact us for details. Children are welcome to attend – again, contact us to make arrangements. Excellent vegetarian meals are included in the course price, from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. Saturday night is Pizza Night, where you can either participate in creating and baking pizzas in our traditional oven, or just spectate with a glass of wine, before moving on to absorb the special night-time atmosphere in the tipi, where you can enjoy listening to – or having a go at – African drumming or guitar playing. Musicians welcome! The price for the course is for per person, camping. We have limited dormitory accommodation available. Please indicate your requests when booking. COURSE CONTENT Over the two days, there will be a balanced delivery of theoretical and practical sessions. The topics covered and what you will be doing, are – Assessing your land (or potential land) – acknowledging the features and maximising their potential. Ecosystem – recognising and encouraging the development of your lands’ unique ecosystem. Designing your space – considering how, why and where to locate gardens, vegetable patches, animals, features and infrastructure. Organic fruit and vegetables – developing an awareness of organic growing, See the methods in action – then enjoy the results fresh for dinner! Preserving and storing your produce – discovering various ways of enabling you to enjoy the fruits of your labour all year round. Planning and drawing skills – learning how to present your ideas accurately and clearly. Natural building and sculptural construction – experimenting with adobe and realising what can be achieved using natural and recycled materials. Prices and Payment For the 2 days including 3 meals a day (camping) – 100 euros per person Dormitory accommodation is an extra 10 euros per person (limited dormitory accommodation available)

Vamos construir um galinheiro em terra palha! Estrutura em madeira, cerca de 2x3mts, e paredes de terrapalha

O workshop é bastante práctico, e devem trazer botas de trabalho, luvas de trabalho e luvas de borracha resistentes, comida para picnic, e talvez um chapéu.

Permaculture Design Course – Aljezur Set2010

Official Permaculture Design Course From 11 to 19 of September 2010, the official 72 hours Permaculture Design Course will take place in the Várzea da Gonçala, Aljezur, Portugal.

The course follows a 72 hour set syllabus and leads to the internationally recognized Permaculture Certificate.

Tutor: Lesley Martin was an organic grower and farmer in Cornwall for 20 years before taking a Permaculture Design course in 1995. She went on to take the Permaculture Diploma, with a 2 year teaching apprenticeship.

After qualifying as a teacher in Adult Education she delivered Government funded Permaculture Training Courses throughout the South West of England before moving to Portugal in 1999.

The subjects covered include:

Ethics and principles; Learning strategies; Pattern in design; Bio diversity; Water in the landscape; Forests and trees; Soils; Climate; Buildings and structures; Formal/informal economies; Community development;

The course includes a number of practical sessions and culminates in a 2 day design workshop.

The place: Várzea da Gonçala is a smallholding/community located 7km NE from Aljezur, on the west Algarve.

We live in harmony with each other and the surrounding nature and have a few requests for you:

• Please do not bring dogs. We already have one here and there are enough locally as it is.

• We only use bio-degradable cleaning products, so please do not bring shampoos, soap etc, that our grey water treatment system will not enjoy. Suitable products will be available for purchase here.

• To avoid too many cars here, we are able to collect you from Aljezur, should you opt to travel by public transport. For further info, please contact us. • We do have internet access here and mobile signal is not brilliant. We do have the landline phone though, and can take messages for you whilst you are here.

• Whilst we have no objection per se of parents bringing children, we do not have facilities or people to look after them, and hope people respect the fact that this is an adult learning course and children could cause an unwanted distraction for all.

• Please respect our daily doings and do not arrive before the afternoon of 5th March.

• Live-in buses and vans by prior arrangement only. Thanks.

Prices and Payment: Total cost of this course is €300 which includes:

Camping area (bring your own tent).

Use of compost toilet and hot shower. Breakfast, lunch and dinner – meals will be vegetarian and eaten communally. (Meals to include evening meal on 10th September and breakfast on 20th)

Permaculture course tuition and official certificate.

Dormitory accommodation is available for an extra €100.

If a student cancels after 1st of September we cannot refund any payment made.

After booking, €150 should be transferred to our bank account as a deposit – contact us as above for details, unless you paid via PayPal on the website. The remaining balance will be due on arrival. In the unlikely event of insufficient numbers enrolling, the course will be cancelled and monies paid will be refunded.

10:15 h. Lecture about solar cooking (types, devices, experiences, recipes, environmental information)

11:30 h. Demonstration to make your own solar cooking device / preparation of the solar cooked lunch

(there will be some refreshments present)

13:00 h. Solar lunch, in the mean time prepared on the present parabólicas, ovens and other types of devices
